Dinaz Cassim: Jan 2018

Dinaz Cassim at the library.

Dinaz Cassim an author and illustrator, came into school to share her book 'Art Day for Animals', a book which looks at the elements of art and also showcases contemporary Malaysian art. The key stage one students loved her illustrations and readily look up the ideas. They could identify line, shape, pattern, colour etc in the contemporary art and be able to take on the idea that in art. We can use our own interpretations and bring our ideas to modern art. The language developed was great.

After sharing her book, Dinaz modelled how to draw her monkey character, which delighted the children, many of who went back and did, guess what?... Drawings of monkeys.

Dinaz came into school on Friday to act as an 'Artist in Residence'. This allowed the children to observe how she works, ask more questions and see how ideas develop. Making links to the real world and how people work is an essential facet of life here at Alice Smith. It was great to have a female illustrator in school and this has left a lasting impression!
